Ismail Qureshi, currently serving with Finance Ministry as Additional Secretary, is being tipped as Secretary, Commerce. The post had fallen vacant with the retirement of Kemal Afser.

Sources told Business Recorder on Friday that Tasneem Noorani and Khalid Saeed's names are also under consideration for the slot but their early retirement is likely to become disadvantage for the job since the government would prefer an officer who can hold the office for at least three years.

Qureshi is currently serving in Grade 21 but his promotion in Grade 22 is due shortly.

Qureshi's engagement in budget preparation and awaited promotion may delay his appointment as Commerce Secretary till the announcement of the budget.
